Day 24 of the @nendaiko #TaikoLove challenge is #bachi. We don't have any specific photos of bachi so I decided to share photos where the bachi kind of became a focal point of the photo. One photo is from Perry Street fair in 2017. The other from Fairchild Airforce Base during their Asian Pacific American celebration. #TaikoLove #spokanetaiko #taiko #drums #drumming #japanesestyledrumming #spokane #bachi

Day 24 is Bachi! Bachi are the sticks we use to play taiko. They come in a variety of wood types, lengths, thicknesses. The variety allows us to play different drums, and to also get different sounds out of the drum. Kat-garoo pictured here is collecting bachi after a demo we did at an anime convention. #taikolove

#taikolove Day 24 - “bachi”: sometimes they snap, sometimes they’re autographed, and sometimes you get a bunch of new ones in all at once (and it’s better than those book orders back in elementary school!). One things for certain though, they’re utterly essential.

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 24: "Bachi" - I think the best word to describe how I feel when I have my bachi in my hands would be "invincible". Holding a pair of bachi always makes me feel stronger, more confident, and, yes, cooler. It's also really interesting to see how much I've progressed with how I handle my bachi. This drawing was inspired by a guy I practice with, who I'll keep anonymous for now. He has a really natural and beautiful way of using his bachi as an extension of himself. I'm not sure how much my own bachi technique has improved by watching him perform, but I hope one day I'll be able to play just as well. . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #mujipens #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #bachi #nendaiko

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 25: "Friendships" - I really like the taiko pieces where you have two (or more!) people facing each other while playing, like Isamigoma/Tombane. At first it feels awkward to keep eye contact, but then you really get to CONNECT with your fellow players. Also, both mistakes and those perfectly-performed-moments are better with a taiko buddy cheering you on. It's a great bonding experience. â–¡ . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #mujipens #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #friendships #nendaiko

As a 45 year old organization, many friendships have been made by people within our group as well as with people from around the world. One of these friendships we're extremely fortunate to have is with the group Kodo. Our early members became friends with the pioneering members of Kodo even before they were Kodo, back in the 70s when they were still part of Ondekoza. This friendship has continued through the years and is now part of the fabric of the new generations of both of our groups. We were so happy to have them come to our studio last year when they were on tour to enjoy some good food and dance Ei Ja Nai Ka while helping them celebrate their groups 35th Anniversary. @nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 27 theme: intensity. If you have ever seen us perform Aoba Castle, composed by our very own Paul Butler (based on the popular Japanese song Kojo no Tsuki by Rentaro Taki) then you understand why this piece is the musical embodiment of intensity. As the two sides battle each other with archers and sword fights, the tension slowly builds. It continues to grow as the generals enter the battle and our heroes fight. It all comes to a head during an intense melee involving both armies. How does the battle end? You'll have to come watch us perform the piece to find out! â–¡: Elissa Goldberg at the 2018 Sakura Taiko Takeover at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #instadrums #intensity

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 28: "Teaching" - A quick sketch today, from a teacher's point-of-view. I recently started teaching a new piece to some of the newer members of our taiko group, and it's been pretty interesting. So far, I've learned that flexibility, patience, and positivity are the most important qualities to keep in mind. It's my first time teaching a taiko piece, so sometimes it can get frustrating, but it's pretty amazing when you watch your trainees perform together for the first time. @nendaiko nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 20 Theme: composition. The evolution of a song is a fascinating thing. Our original piece, Taikyuu, started with a set of rhythm patterns composed by KyoDaiko founder, June O’Neill, with the wish that they be used to create a piece to play in beta uchi style. After two (2.5?) arrangements by two different instructors, we have ended up with the current arrangement of three players across seven odaiko and chu nagado with two shime players. Will it evolve even more? Who knows? But that’s one of the things that makes playing taiko so fun. □: Therese Stephen, Performing Group Class, October 2017 #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #asanotaiko #katotaiko #instadrums #instaphilly #philadelphia #philly #composition

We are a little delayed in celebrating Day 20 of the #taikolove challenge, but here is our photo on composition! We have a good number of pieces that were given to us to perform, but we also have quite a few original pieces written by our own players. Although this photo isn't of us writing a piece it does show what it takes in our group to write, teach, and prepare to perform an original composition. #MoreAreInTheWorks #TheDenverSound

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 20: "Composition" - When I think of composition, I think of sheet music, and when I think of sheet music, I think of the piano. I actually played piano before I even knew that taiko existed. To be honest, I hated practicing piano most of the time. But a lot of the skills that I learned from it (keeping a steady tempo, controlling my volume, keeping track of multiple rhythms at once) actually help me a LOT when playing taiko. Glad my parents made me practice even when I was being a little nightmare. â–¡ . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #mujipens #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #composition #sheetmusic #sheetmusicart #piano #music #kuchishoga #nendaiko

#taikolove Day 20: Composition. We've had over 100 original compositions in our history, including several SJT classics that were written in our group's first 10 years. Gendai Ni Ikiru (Living in the Present) composed by Gary Tsujimoto in 1978 has been our signature song for decades and has been performed around the country and the world over the years.

Day 20 is #composition . Most of our old rep is located in our drop box. We found this old audio clip, and noticed it was an old song that had been performed before any of us had started in the group. So none of us knew the whole piece (some knew parts of rhythms),and there was no sheet music, but we really wanted to play it. Two of our members listened to the audio and transcribed the entire song! Eventually we were able to put it to stage and perform it! #taikolove

A lot of things can happen backstage at a taiko performance; equipment movement, costume changes, dancing, and for us before big concerts, group centering and connecting. As a company we join hands and share our ki with each other before giving our message for the evening. It's not something we do before every performance (120 times a year can be a bit much) but we do it before our home concerts and when we travel the country on tour. #kicircle #connecting #sharethelove

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 22: "Signature Move" - Featuring "the world’s most dangerous half-Japanese/half-Scottish solo improvisational taiko artist", the one and only Mark H. Rooney, doing his signature bachi maneuvers. The first time I ever met Mark was at ECTC 2017. Literally as soon as we arrived, my group started helping other people unload their drums. I remember hearing someone address the apparent equipment owner as "Mark," which I recognized from the workshop leader bios. I was pretty nervous, but I went up to him and asked, "Excuse me, are you Mark Rooney?" He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Mark *H.* Rooney." A memorable start to my first taiko conference ever! Since then, I've had a couple workshops with him, and he's super down-to-earth & just an overall great guy. This is actually my first time doing a full ink drawing of a specific person, so, @markhtaiko thank you/sorry for any anatomical inaccuracies. □ (I used a few reference photos for this one, creds to Ben Pachter/TaikoSource.) . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #mujipens #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #signaturemove #markHrooney #nendaiko

Only because we JUST made a video on this for Taikothon, right now when we hear 'Matsuri,' we're thinking of our 2014 Matsuri Battle with @reachprota ! As the music suggests, it was rather epic. . . . Matsuri Crashers (or Matsuri battles) was an idea by Kris Bergstrom (from @asanotaikous) and is a cross between Midare-uchi/Bon Daiko soloing and dance battles! Each participant does their solo and the crowd's reaction and cheers determine the winner! This has been a great way for us to stay connected with our friends who are north of San Diego...and to keep challenging each other! ;) The year our battle happened, Kris had managed to get ahold of a gym and their boxing ring, which set up for a pretty awesome environment for fierce, but friendly, competition. . . . . A big shout out to @nendaiko for spreading so much #taikolove these past few weeks. #Matsuri, which was first taught to us by Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, is one of our favorite pieces, highlighting what it means to play kumidaiko. Our arrangement features soloists who share an undeniable joy, excitement, and love of taiko with our audiences, and we ourselves can't help but feel overcome by the festival spirit! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #seiichitanaka #sftd50 #sohdaiko40th

This #TaikoLove theme of 'audience' may be different than what others post...but I think it's kind of funny. This is from Heritage Festival, our #1 event of the year where we draw huge crowds. But this year we had an earlier start time for the first show and the weather was very uncooperative. The audience was this person plus my mom, who took the picture :p Even so, we have to play like we're at Carnegie Hall no matter what the audience size is, and this viewer (plus my mom) probably felt very special.

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 15: "Audience" - Some things I learned from performing in front of an audience: (1) When stage lights are on, you can't actually see the audience, just a hazy shimmer. It's both reassuring and nerve-wracking. (2) No matter how big or small the audience is, there is a palpable energy that's exchanged between the performers and the people watching. (3) Stage fright is ALWAYS going to be there. But the rush of a good performance is always worth it. (4) Just keep chugging, even if you mess up. The audience will forgive you (if they even notice at all). (5) You appreciate every person who takes the time to watch. (6) Still learning to live in the moment during performances - they go by faster than you realize. . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #markers #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #audience #nendaiko

We wear a number of different happi when we perform and each has a specific obi (belt) and hachimaki (headband) to complete the look. Depending on the weather and the occasion, we might wear shorts or pants. We've had over a dozen different happi throughout our history, each designed by members of our group. There are a handful still in our performance rotation and some that have been retired from active duty. Most of our happi feature maple leaf design accents to commemorate San Jose Taiko starting in Fall 1973. And sometimes, when the occasion is right, we'll wear something other than our happi! #taikolove

Day 16 of the @nendaiko #taikolove Photo Challenge unexpectedly turned into a really special one because tracking down the evolution of our uniforms became a trip down memory lane! It's pretty special to see the look we began with and where we are now! . . . Our main color as you may have guessed is GREEN. While there are many reasons for the choice, one of the important reasons is that green is a result of mixing different colors, which represents the blending of our energies and backgrounds in this group! . . . 10 years ago, our first set of happi were homemade by our founder's mother. Back then we didn't even have tabi, so our early performances had a person who was barefoot, one with shoes, and only one with tabi. As the group grew, t-shirts became the best way to unify everyone and those have changed over the years as well. . . . The "green pants era" was when a member brought back some Vietnamese pants that really added a pop and flowiness to our performance. Kind of miss those! . . . Soon we looked into what would really help accentuate our intensity and provide ease with which to play big, and in the heat of the California sun! The harakake (apron) entered into our lives and has stayed ever since (also loved having multiple pockets). We'd also donned the hakama (large pants) which added a sense of groundedness and strength to our odaiko players. . . . Our personal gear has also evolved into tank tops, jackets, and hats for those gigs that are not too formal or need endurance (marathon!) Want one? . . . Our latest happi are still completely homemade by some of our amazing sewing wizards (who also made one for our mascot)! Even our kiddos wear them even though they are still a bit too tiny for these happi. Our women now have an extra splash of green with the harakake while our men bare their backs. . . . It's going to be fun to see what we decide to wear next! . . . #taikolovephotochallenge #taiko #naruwantaiko #uniforms #harakake #happi #hakama #太鼓

#taikolove Day 16 - “uniforms” - starting with the original black hanten, then progressing through the reds and reversible gray/multicolor set, we eventually transitioned to black sleeveless tees - most recently adopting the modern dri-fit material as much a statement of our youth-oriented approach as a well as for practical reasons. (They fade a lot less compared to cotton and they’re much cooler to play in during the Hawaii heat and humidity!). Look for a new red set coming soon!

Nen Daiko's #TaikoLove photo challenge theme today is 'uniform'. KNT is fortunate to have a wide variety of costumes both traditionally and modern themed. We have a lot of fun with the creativity for special shows. This one features Omar as Raijin for the ESO's Kid's Symphony series. He was committed to the make up, the mask and the character. Watching the children in the audience was great because they were scared at first, but afterwards came to give him hugs. The mask was made by KNT members, as well!

Day 16 of @nendaiko photo challenge is costume. Taiko in Bowling Green, OH (had to make a BG distinction â–¡) started with a class offered at the university (seen in orange). Then a student org grew out of that (seen in blue and white). Now, as a community org, we designed our happi to be a mix of the two groups we came from. We found fabric that had blue and orange in it, with a majority of our color being blue. A performance member's Aunt sewed them all for us. They are also reversible to have the print on both front panels! #taikolove #bgtaiko #bgsu

October 17 - Beginner's Mind

Naruwan Taiko

Day 17 of the @nendaiko #taikolove Photo Challenge: Beginner’s Mind | "One of Naruwan's greatest joys is offering classes to young children. By teaching children, we in turn get the opportunity to learn from them. Most children don't begin their first taiko class by asking, "What's the correct way to hit a drum? How do I hold an uchiwa?" They explore instinctively with curiosity, enthusiasm, and sheer joy. With all the necessary drills and numerous details that a performing ensemble must attend to, it's easy to get caught up in the way things "should" be, and forget the awesomeness of what's actually happening in the moment. When we teach beginners, we get to recognize how much experience we've gained and honor that knowledge by sharing it with others. When we learn from beginners, we get to be unchained from our experience, by remembering the original joy that brought us to taiko. The more we practice taiko, the more we strive to wear our expertise comfortably enough that we can become beginners again. . . . A beginner mind is a blank uchiwa. A beginner mind is full of possibilities. A beginner mind is resonant mind. A beginner mind can ring with any sound. A beginner mind never finishes beginning."

Overheard at a taiko conference (paraphrasing)...”these young guys are amazing - I learned so much from them!” The speaker was Kenny Endo and he was talking about working with members of @on_ensemble. Being open and humble. Should be simple enough, but sometimes - both in life and in taiko - it’s not. And sometimes it’s the least “beginner” among us who exemplify beginner’s mind the best. We are very lucky that in the taiko world, we have many people to learn from who are open, humble, and infinitely generous and patient in sharing their knowledge with us. @nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 17 Theme: beginner’s mind. □: Therese Stephen, 2015 North American Taiko Conference #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #philadelphia #philly #beginnersmind

Over the years, we’ve been extremely fortunate to have hosted workshops with instructors from near and far who have all helped us to learn, develop and explore as drummers and students! Day 17: Beginner’s Mind. I often lose track of this concept but it is important to have in order to keep growing and learning. The video is of us working on timing and form. I often feel like a broken record at times when we go over form and kata, but they are key components to taiko. Your form affects the sound you make on the drum and your ability to do various movements. Nakama members, if you’re reading this...please continue to be mindful about your form. “No T-Rex taiko, extend dem arms, keep enough space between you and the drum” □ those little things is what will make you stand out in the crowd. Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 17: "Beginner's Mind" - (TBH I'm not entirely satisfied with how this one turned out, but I've been pretty busy with schoolwork, so I'd much rather draw something small than nothing at all.) - As a beginner, there's a lot of annoying stuff to deal with: sore muscles, blistered hands, repetitive drills, tiny form corrections, and boring beginner patterns. Luckily, I had some really encouraging teachers who made it fun and helped me improve. They're still teaching me new things all the time! Now, I'm learning cool new pieces and helping this year's newbies learn the basics. Good stuff happens if you keep learning. â–¡ . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #markers #color #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #beginner #nendaiko

Day 18 is connection! Connection is so important in taiko. The connection between the player and the taiko, the players of the group, the ensemble and their audience, with the taiko community, etc. The first picture was taken at a local event-- we thought it was a cute moment showing both young and old can enjoy taiko. The two individuals do not know each other, but they still, in that moment, were playing together, experiencing something new together. *we also love that they were both wearing pinkâ–¡* The second picture was taken at our first concert without a crucial member who had moved away. Before she left, she gifted us all a pair of tabi socks. So we all wore them for that performance so she was still with us. We consider ourselves a familyâ–¡ The connections made through taiko is probably my favorite part of playing taiko. #taikolove #taikofamily #thiswillprobablymakeallisoncry @nendaiko

@nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 11: collaboration. The biggest collaboration KyoDaiko has ever done was working with Kaoru Watanabe in 2012-2013 to learn ‘Hiraki,’ a piece he wrote in response to the March 11, 2011 disaster in Tohoku, Japan. Over the course of several months, we had multiple, 6-hour workshops with Kaoru and lots of additional practices in between those. In teaching Hiraki, Kaoru also reserved a section of the piece for our group to personalize. A small group travelled up to Brooklyn to work with him on that part, then brought the ideas developed back to the rest of the group. The collaboration culminated in two April performances with Kaoru and 18 KyoDaiko members. The performances were part of PIFA 2013 (Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts). One was a full concert at Settlement Music School’s Mary Louise Curtis branch where Hiraki was performed as the finale. The second performance took place at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, with performers playing in the house, along two sides of the veranda and in the garden. Kaoru’s wandering fue solo at the start, mixed with the sound of the garden’s waterfall, had the audience mesmerized from the very start. Keep intending to post but keep missing these themes... But this is one of my favorites - "collaboration" (yes, from yesterday!) Since moving to DC, I have had the great pleasure to do several collaborations with non-taiko entities on extremely diverse projects. From playing the "Game of Thrones" theme with an amazing string quartet (Triforce Quartet) to accompanying several modern dance pieces with UpRooted Dance and Dance Exchange to improvised urban street performances with Shanna Lim to various #randomactsoftaiko with many different taiko artists, still one of my happiest of all was playing Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" with ilyAIMY and KIZUNA w/ Greg Nakamura and Lisa Nakamura of Nen Daiko and Hanae Coutrier. Day 11 of @nendaiko #taikolove photo challenge: COLLABORATION! "Collaboration makes me think of the taiko community in San Diego! We hosted North American Taiko Conference 2017, and for that conference, a call was put out to all local groups to collaborate on creating a new community piece for the conference. . . . The result was "Komyuniti," composed by members of several groups in the city, and included a dance depicting our many activities in San Diego. Once the song was written, learning sessions were offered and one of our members also traveled to practices throughout the county to teach the piece to the different groups and record each session. A video was then edited and put together, showcasing San Diego and its taiko community. . . . During NATC 2017, "Komyuniti" was performed at Opening Session (complete with the San Diego community wearing all things San Diego), and again at Taiko Ten by members representing all the taiko groups in San Diego! "Komyuniti" was spearheaded in 2016 by Jimmy (Naruwan Taiko) , Kathy (San Diego Taiko), Chad (La Jolla Taiko) with a dance choreographed by Chelsey (Buddhist Temple San Diego) and Devin (Naruwan Taiko). A true piece of collaboration!" . . . What a blast to perform onstage with @sandiegotaiko, @lajollataiko, @genbudaiko, Vista Buddhist Temple, Buddhist Temple San Diego, and Ohana Taiko! . . . Check out our profile for the video our community put together getting folks excited for the conference in San Diego! #taiko #taikocommunitysd #taikocommunitysandiego #太鼓 @taikocommunitysd Photos by @taikocommunity Alliance

Am I jumping in late to TWO Instagram challenges at once? Yup. â–¡ Presenting my first submission for both #inktober2018 and the @nendaiko #TaikoLove challenge. Today's prompt was "byo," which I actually had to look up, but they're the tacks holding the skin of a taiko drum to its wooden body. In my head, I see a taiko drum waiting in an empty room, illuminated by the light from a single window - waiting for a player to create something magical. . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #byo #nendaiko

#taikolove Day 12 - “byou”. These unique tacks are used to secure the head to the body of the taiko. Good byou are hard to come by and worth every penny - so much so, that we’ve become quite adept at straightening and repainting our byou whenever we re-head the drum. We think they make for great photos too! In fact a row of byou was featured on our most recent concert poster!

Byō, the metal tacks that hold the drum head in place. We are almost always in the process of reheading our drums, which means we're in constant need of byō that are ready to use. Whenever we remove them from a drum, we straighten the nails and repaint them so they'll look new when we use them again. Any other taiko groups out there straighten and reuse their byō? #taikolove

Atarigane, also called chanchiki, is a brass instrument played with a shumoku (mallet or beater) typically with a tip made of deer antler. It adds a bright contrast to the sound of the big drums. This is a lovely throwback pic of pre-performance preparation by former KyoDaiko member, Travis. @nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 14 Theme: Atarigane â–¡: @travisclau (August 30, 2015 at the Philadelphia #Obon Festival at @shofuso ) #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #instadrums #instaphilly #philadelphia #philly #atarigane #chanchiki

Which of these is not like the other? Day 14 of @nendaiko #taikolove Photo Challenge! How do you describe the atarigane to someone who's never seen one? The atarigane is our key tool for keeping everyone together when playing for 5 hours straight at the Rock 'N Roll Marathon, when everyone is so far apart and there's no acoustics since we're outdoors. But finally, how often do you folks have to fix your shumoku? As a group that tends to go all or nothing, our shumoku has a hard time surviving some of our performances...check out our last vid: can you see when the shumoku head takes a flying leap off the stage? . . . . #naruwantaiko #taikolovephotochallenge #atarigane #shumoku #dogbowl #ashtray

#taikolove Day 14: today’s theme “atarigane”. Also known as the chan-chiki, the atarigane can be found in most taiko groups due to its bright, high sound. As others have stated, studying Edo-Bayashi was truly the gateway to our specialists gaining insight to atarigane technique. (Bonus photo: don’t forget to always pack the shumoku!)

#taikolove Day 14: Atarigane (or kane). We use this instrument in a number of different ways, both handheld or in a set of three on a table. Recently, in a composition exploring the blending of samba and taiko, we featured its two-toned capabilities in conjunction with the agogo, the two-toned samba bell instrument.

The theme of Day 8 of @nendaiko #taikolove Photo Challenge is WOMEN! From one of our members since 2009: "The Taiko drum evokes a sense of strength in so many people! At Naruwan, we love guiding our members and students in feeling this power and harnessing it as a means to express themselves. Too often in today's world climate, women (in particular) feel the pressure to be quiet and reserved; however, in our ensemble, we encourage everyone to let go of these constraints and embrace the power of the family and the drum. We have seen incredible transformations in women who start off timid and shy in their taiko journey, but then develop into empowered, bold, and expressive artists. The beat of the drum, like that of the heart, is in all of us, and it is meant for EVERYONE." . . . . . . #Taiko #taikolovephotochallenge #naruwantaiko #太鼓

Nen Daiko’s #TaikoLove Image Challenge Theme today is Women. Our group was founded by a woman - June W. ONeill - and like many taiko groups, we have always had more women than men in the group. Swipe through for portraits of all our current women performers. What is it about taiko that attracts and inspires so many women? After performances, we often hear from women the words “power” or “powerful” and “joy” or “joyful.” It seems fitting that just yesterday, we performed at an all-day @drumlikealady 5 Year Anniversary takeover of The Barnes Foundation (art museum) in Philadelphia. It was a celebration of female drummers (and the male musicians who support them) - and it was a powerful and joyful event! □: @den_sweeney (Tamiko & Jen), Nick Shenoy (Therese & Lauren), Nolan Wehr (Cathi, Christina, Steph & Elissa) #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #philadelphia #philly #women #instaphilly #instadrums #DrumLikeALady2018 #community #collaboration

I paused during setup to admire the view. Thanks @asanotaikous for my new shime this year! I’m still getting better at tightening it before playing, but I’ll get there soon ??!

Day 10 of the #taikolove challenge, and today’s topic is #shime. Often responsible for holding down the “ji” or backbeat, shime players tend to be less about the ‘flashy’ stuff, but are rather all about keeping things on an even keel. Puna Taiko would like to also make a shout-out to Mr. Ray Nitta of Kaua’i for teaching us the arduous process to stretching and stitching our own shime heads.

Day 3 of the #taikolove challenge with the theme of history. We have 42 years worth of history, but we're going to highlight a special taiko and person today. Mark Miyoshi was a founder of Denver Taiko and a master taiko maker now living in Mt Shasta, CA. This photo is of the first taiko that he made. We lovingly call this taiko "Mark's Drum" and are so honored to hold this little piece of US taiko history. Although we have reskinned the heads a few times, we still have this drum in performance rotation. #DenverTaikoHistory #StillTheBestSound #WeLoveMarkMiyoshi

For our Nen Daiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 3 post on the theme of History, here’s a throwback to our debut performance at the Shofuso Summer Festival in 2005! KyoDaiko was founded in 2005 by June O’Neill. It started as a collaboration between Shofuso Japanese House & Garden and Settlement Music School. Kristopher Rudzinski, our original taiko teacher, had studied with Marco Lienhard of #Taikoza over the course of 1 year before teaching our first class in the Spring of 2005. A few short months later we had our first performance, playing on our two shime, one okedo, and a practice tire (wrapped in festive red cloth to look fancy!□) The performers that day were June O’Neill, Tamiko Laincz, Kazumi Myran, Hao-Li Tai, and Therese Stephen. We didn’t have any team uniform yet, so we just gathered together whatever hachimaki headbands, happi coats and yukata we had to make sure we all at least looked festive! □: Unknown, Shofuso Summer Festival 2005 #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #philadelphia #philly #history #instaphilly #instadrums #asanotaiko

Day 3: History. Nakama Daiko was formed by Tomomi Hongo in 2014 but the story doesn’t start there. Tomomi’s father, Etsuo Hongo (aka Hongo Sensei) formed LA Matsuri Taiko in 1977 and among other groups (San Fernando Mugen Taiko, Venice Koshin Taiko and El Marino Rainbow Taiko) in LA. Tomomi began her taiko career under the direction of her father with El Marino Rainbow Daiko at the age of 8. It was there where she asked her father if she could rename one of his songs to Nakama. Current members of Nakama Daiko all started their taiko journey with El Marino Rainbow Taiko and the name of the group was inspired by Tomomi’s experience with Rainbow Taiko as a student. Today, Tomomi teaches Rainbow Taiko along with two other instructors, @byrone09 and @morris.la #losangeles #taiko #taikolove #japanesedrumming #wadaiko #kumidaiko ?: Big Drum and @ichiniwa

#taikolove Day 3 - “History”: Puna Taiko was founded in 2003 by Jeff Newman and Reverend Earl Ikeda. Although Rev. Earl envisioned taiko classes as a youth outreach, our initial membership came primarily from temple membership (who we affectionately dubbed the “O.G.” or “Original Grandmas”). It wasn’t until we merged with the Keaau High after school taiko class that our current “Youth Performance” group started. As with many fledgling groups, we started out with tires, but quickly moved on to PVC construction pipe drums, and eventually purchased our first set of taiko from Tony Jones and Zenshin Daiko. (Fun fact: our original 4 drums are featured in the now-famous Stanford-Taiko-wine-barrel-taiko-construction guide.”

Day 3 of the #taikolove challenge: HISTORY! We began in 2008 when our founder was fresh out of college and not ready to say goodbye to taiko just yet. Seeing the potential that taiko had for building community, she made preparations to hold a workshop in hopes of growing a new taiko group in San Diego. After a day of scrambling around town collecting tires from local auto shops, she called up her friends from @calraijintaiko and @asayake_taiko and they spent the afternoon and night tire scrubbing, taping, and dowel cutting/sanding. On the day of the workshop (held at the Taiwanese American Community Center thanks to their generosity), Asayake also kindly brought their taiko drums and both they and Cal Taiko performed to inspire the workshop attendees! It was truly an example of taiko community coming together to help an individual begin another place for people to discover taiko. It's exciting to see that these friends have also gone on to become prominent members of @sanjosetaiko , @sandiegotaiko, @reachprota, @kishindaiko, as well as leaders in @taikocommunity Alliance! Finally, it is important to also remember the people who stuck around with the group's beginnings when all we had were the tires and one very old lion dance drum that we'd found covered in dust. Thank you for taking the chance when all that could be offered at the time was a vision. Without the efforts, trust, and generosity of the community, we wouldn't be where we are today. . . . . #taiko @nendaiko #taikohistory #naruwantaiko
