Day 3 of the #taikolove challenge with the theme of history. We have 42 years worth of history, but we're going to highlight a special taiko and person today. Mark Miyoshi was a founder of Denver Taiko and a master taiko maker now living in Mt Shasta, CA. This photo is of the first taiko that he made. We lovingly call this taiko "Mark's Drum" and are so honored to hold this little piece of US taiko history. Although we have reskinned the heads a few times, we still have this drum in performance rotation. #DenverTaikoHistory #StillTheBestSound #WeLoveMarkMiyoshi

For our Nen Daiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 3 post on the theme of History, here’s a throwback to our debut performance at the Shofuso Summer Festival in 2005! KyoDaiko was founded in 2005 by June O’Neill. It started as a collaboration between Shofuso Japanese House & Garden and Settlement Music School. Kristopher Rudzinski, our original taiko teacher, had studied with Marco Lienhard of #Taikoza over the course of 1 year before teaching our first class in the Spring of 2005. A few short months later we had our first performance, playing on our two shime, one okedo, and a practice tire (wrapped in festive red cloth to look fancy!□) The performers that day were June O’Neill, Tamiko Laincz, Kazumi Myran, Hao-Li Tai, and Therese Stephen. We didn’t have any team uniform yet, so we just gathered together whatever hachimaki headbands, happi coats and yukata we had to make sure we all at least looked festive! □: Unknown, Shofuso Summer Festival 2005 #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #philadelphia #philly #history #instaphilly #instadrums #asanotaiko

Day 3: History. Nakama Daiko was formed by Tomomi Hongo in 2014 but the story doesn’t start there. Tomomi’s father, Etsuo Hongo (aka Hongo Sensei) formed LA Matsuri Taiko in 1977 and among other groups (San Fernando Mugen Taiko, Venice Koshin Taiko and El Marino Rainbow Taiko) in LA. Tomomi began her taiko career under the direction of her father with El Marino Rainbow Daiko at the age of 8. It was there where she asked her father if she could rename one of his songs to Nakama. Current members of Nakama Daiko all started their taiko journey with El Marino Rainbow Taiko and the name of the group was inspired by Tomomi’s experience with Rainbow Taiko as a student. Today, Tomomi teaches Rainbow Taiko along with two other instructors, @byrone09 and @morris.la #losangeles #taiko #taikolove #japanesedrumming #wadaiko #kumidaiko ?: Big Drum and @ichiniwa

#taikolove Day 3 - “History”: Puna Taiko was founded in 2003 by Jeff Newman and Reverend Earl Ikeda. Although Rev. Earl envisioned taiko classes as a youth outreach, our initial membership came primarily from temple membership (who we affectionately dubbed the “O.G.” or “Original Grandmas”). It wasn’t until we merged with the Keaau High after school taiko class that our current “Youth Performance” group started. As with many fledgling groups, we started out with tires, but quickly moved on to PVC construction pipe drums, and eventually purchased our first set of taiko from Tony Jones and Zenshin Daiko. (Fun fact: our original 4 drums are featured in the now-famous Stanford-Taiko-wine-barrel-taiko-construction guide.”

Day 3 of the #taikolove challenge: HISTORY! We began in 2008 when our founder was fresh out of college and not ready to say goodbye to taiko just yet. Seeing the potential that taiko had for building community, she made preparations to hold a workshop in hopes of growing a new taiko group in San Diego. After a day of scrambling around town collecting tires from local auto shops, she called up her friends from @calraijintaiko and @asayake_taiko and they spent the afternoon and night tire scrubbing, taping, and dowel cutting/sanding. On the day of the workshop (held at the Taiwanese American Community Center thanks to their generosity), Asayake also kindly brought their taiko drums and both they and Cal Taiko performed to inspire the workshop attendees! It was truly an example of taiko community coming together to help an individual begin another place for people to discover taiko. It's exciting to see that these friends have also gone on to become prominent members of @sanjosetaiko , @sandiegotaiko, @reachprota, @kishindaiko, as well as leaders in @taikocommunity Alliance! Finally, it is important to also remember the people who stuck around with the group's beginnings when all we had were the tires and one very old lion dance drum that we'd found covered in dust. Thank you for taking the chance when all that could be offered at the time was a vision. Without the efforts, trust, and generosity of the community, we wouldn't be where we are today. . . . . #taiko @nendaiko #taikohistory #naruwantaiko

Missed Day 4 so catching up today. Well, you just know we couldn't WAIT for Day 7 of @nendaiko 's #taikolove Photo Challenge: KIAI ("spirit call")! If there's anything we embrace more than carne asada fries, it's the spirit and energy we emote on stage through our voices! As a member puts it, "When I kiai, it's not just to make noise, but to hype myself up-- I feel like energy starts with the voice, and if you can yell explosively, you'll be able to follow through with explosive actions." . . . . . #taiko #naruwantaiko #kiai #taikolovechallenge #太鼓 #sandiego #spirit #energy #rawenergy #connection #japanesedrumming PC: @brysonhk @mmmitchmitchmitch @tracycornish
