![]() Nen Daiko is pleased to announce we will perform at the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s Grand Sake Tasting on Wednesday, September 30. The event is from 7-9pm at The Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square – 801 K St NW, Washington, DC 20001. Explore the worlds of sake, shōchū, and craft beer alongside tastings of Japanese cuisine by local restaurants. At this exclusive event, fifteen breweries directly from Japan will offer tastings of their craft beverages, among the world’s finest produced, creating a one-of-a-kind experience in the United States. VIP tickets, which include an extra hour of access to the event from 6 -7 PM, and a gift bag, are $150. General admission is $100. Event proceeds benefit the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Purchase your tickets today! ![]() Experience a special celebration of the Harvest Moon to the rousing beat of the drum and the lilting song of the flute. Nen Daiko will perform at Otsukimi at Ekoji Buddhist Temple on Saturday, September 26. Otsukimi runs from 6:30-9pm. Otsukimi means watching the moon rise, and celebrating the harvest moon is an ancient custom in Japan. The moon will rise at 6:09 p.m., and should be high in the sky by 8:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. This event is co-presented with the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASW) and Ekoji Buddhist Temple. Activities at the event include:
Pre-Order Obentos by September 24 Bring a picnic dinner or order an obento (box meal with Japanese food). Soft drinks, shave ice, snacks, and dango (sweet dumplings that represent the moon) will be on sale. Obento orders MUST be received and paid for in advance no later than 1:00 p.m., Thursday, September 24. Vegetarian obento is by request only, and there is no special obento for children. The event will be held rain or shine. ![]() Here’s a chance to try something new! Hit really big Japanese drums and feel that big “DON” reverberate through your body. Once a year, Nen Daiko offers basic taiko workshops for kids and adults. After a short warm-up, learn how to stand, how to hit with your whole body, and even a short song. Kids play taiko games. Becoming a Nen Daiko Apprentice Are you looking for a new challenge in your life, and would like to make taiko your next hobby? You get a musical skill and a work-out, as well as a cultural experience. You can audition to become a Nen Daiko apprentice after the adult workshop from 4-4:30pm. This is the only audition for the 2015-16 season. The apprenticeship program runs from September – June. You must be available most Sundays from 2-5:30pm to attend the apprenticeship program, except weekends with a federal holiday. By April, we perform almost every Saturday at Cherry Blossom events. No experience is necessary to audition for the apprenticeship program. You will learn enough in the workshop to audition. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm! |
