Here’s a chance to try something new! Hit really big Japanese drums and feel that big “DON” reverberate through your body.

Once a year, Nen Daiko offers basic taiko workshops for kids and adults. After a short warm-up, learn how to stand, how to hit with your whole body, and even a short song. Kids play taiko games. It might look like it’s all arm action, but you use your whole body to get that sound. No experience is necessary!

What Day: Saturday September 19, 2015

What Time:

  • Kids ages 5-11 - 9:30-10am registration, 10:00-11:30am for workshop

  • Adults (ages 12+) - 1-1:30pm registration, 1:30-4pm for workshop

Where: Ekoji Buddhist Temple near Burke Lake Park - 6500 Lake Haven Lane, Fairfax Station, VA – free parking

Cost: $20 for kids, $30 for adults, $40 for adults with Nen Daiko t-shirt (shirts regularly cost $15) - all fees in cash only

What to Bring:

  • Comfortable light-weight work-out clothing (the room gets warm)
  • No shoes are necessary because we practice in bare feet
  • Ear plugs - like the squishy kind that you get on airplanes
  • We’ll lend you drum sticks during the workshop

How: Email info@nendaiko.org to secure your spot.

Babysitting available for the afternoon workshop if you register by September 18, 5pm. This costs $10 (cash only).

Becoming a Nen Daiko Apprentice

Are you looking for a new challenge in your life, and would like to make taiko your next hobby? You get a musical skill and a work-out, as well as a cultural experience. You can audition to become a Nen Daiko apprentice after the adult workshop from 4-4:30pm. This is the only audition for the 2015-16 season.

The apprenticeship program runs from September – June. You must be available most Sundays from 2-5:30pm to attend the apprenticeship program, except weekends with a federal holiday. By April, we perform almost every Saturday at Cherry Blossom events.

No experience is necessary to audition for the apprenticeship program. You will learn enough in the workshop to audition. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm!
