@nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 11: collaboration. The biggest collaboration KyoDaiko has ever done was working with Kaoru Watanabe in 2012-2013 to learn ‘Hiraki,’ a piece he wrote in response to the March 11, 2011 disaster in Tohoku, Japan. Over the course of several months, we had multiple, 6-hour workshops with Kaoru and lots of additional practices in between those. In teaching Hiraki, Kaoru also reserved a section of the piece for our group to personalize. A small group travelled up to Brooklyn to work with him on that part, then brought the ideas developed back to the rest of the group. The collaboration culminated in two April performances with Kaoru and 18 KyoDaiko members. The performances were part of PIFA 2013 (Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts). One was a full concert at Settlement Music School’s Mary Louise Curtis branch where Hiraki was performed as the finale. The second performance took place at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, with performers playing in the house, along two sides of the veranda and in the garden. Kaoru’s wandering fue solo at the start, mixed with the sound of the garden’s waterfall, had the audience mesmerized from the very start. It was a very ambitious project for KyoDaiko, but we definitely grew a lot in the process. We will always be grateful to Kaoru for his patience, encouragement, and the many, many lessons we learned from him throughout the collaboration! #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #philadelphia #philly #instadrums #instaphilly #collaboration #PIFA2013 @kaorufue

Keep intending to post but keep missing these themes... But this is one of my favorites - "collaboration" (yes, from yesterday!) Since moving to DC, I have had the great pleasure to do several collaborations with non-taiko entities on extremely diverse projects. From playing the "Game of Thrones" theme with an amazing string quartet (Triforce Quartet) to accompanying several modern dance pieces with UpRooted Dance and Dance Exchange to improvised urban street performances with Shanna Lim to various #randomactsoftaiko with many different taiko artists, still one of my happiest of all was playing Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" with ilyAIMY and KIZUNA w/ Greg Nakamura and Lisa Nakamura of Nen Daiko and Hanae Coutrier. Day 11 of @nendaiko #taikolove photo challenge: COLLABORATION! "Collaboration makes me think of the taiko community in San Diego! We hosted North American Taiko Conference 2017, and for that conference, a call was put out to all local groups to collaborate on creating a new community piece for the conference. . . . The result was "Komyuniti," composed by members of several groups in the city, and included a dance depicting our many activities in San Diego. Once the song was written, learning sessions were offered and one of our members also traveled to practices throughout the county to teach the piece to the different groups and record each session. A video was then edited and put together, showcasing San Diego and its taiko community. . . . During NATC 2017, "Komyuniti" was performed at Opening Session (complete with the San Diego community wearing all things San Diego), and again at Taiko Ten by members representing all the taiko groups in San Diego! "Komyuniti" was spearheaded in 2016 by Jimmy (Naruwan Taiko) , Kathy (San Diego Taiko), Chad (La Jolla Taiko) with a dance choreographed by Chelsey (Buddhist Temple San Diego) and Devin (Naruwan Taiko). A true piece of collaboration!" . . . What a blast to perform onstage with @sandiegotaiko, @lajollataiko, @genbudaiko, Vista Buddhist Temple, Buddhist Temple San Diego, and Ohana Taiko! . . . Check out our profile for the video our community put together getting folks excited for the conference in San Diego! #taiko #taikocommunitysd #taikocommunitysandiego #太鼓 @taikocommunitysd Photos by @taikocommunity Alliance

Am I jumping in late to TWO Instagram challenges at once? Yup. â–¡ Presenting my first submission for both #inktober2018 and the @nendaiko #TaikoLove challenge. Today's prompt was "byo," which I actually had to look up, but they're the tacks holding the skin of a taiko drum to its wooden body. In my head, I see a taiko drum waiting in an empty room, illuminated by the light from a single window - waiting for a player to create something magical. . . . #inktober #inktober2018 #art #artistsoninstagram #artistsofinstagram #drawing #drawingchallenge #pen #ink #inkart #sharpie #sharpieart #moleskine #TaikoLove #taiko #byo #nendaiko

#taikolove Day 12 - “byou”. These unique tacks are used to secure the head to the body of the taiko. Good byou are hard to come by and worth every penny - so much so, that we’ve become quite adept at straightening and repainting our byou whenever we re-head the drum. We think they make for great photos too! In fact a row of byou was featured on our most recent concert poster!

Byō, the metal tacks that hold the drum head in place. We are almost always in the process of reheading our drums, which means we're in constant need of byō that are ready to use. Whenever we remove them from a drum, we straighten the nails and repaint them so they'll look new when we use them again. Any other taiko groups out there straighten and reuse their byō? #taikolove

Day 13 of @nendaiko #taikolove photo challenge: FOOD! "Food and music have a mysterious ability to cross borders and connect cultures. Both are able to engage our senses, as well as draw in large diverse crowds. Flavors and sounds can harmonize or clash with others, creating unique rhythms for both our palates and our ears. At Naruwan, some of our closest bonding is when we get to share our stories with each other and our teachers while scarfing down some carne asada fries and washing it down with a nice hoppy craft fermented beverage...important staples of the San Diego food scene!" . . . And just sayin', a popcorn machine can do wonders for group morale. ;) . . . #taiko #taikolovephotochallenge #food #carneasadafries #sandiegocraftbeer #taikocommunity #naruwantaiko

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 13: "Food" - One of our regular fundraiser-foods is croquettes. They're fried potato balls that usually have a meat or veggie filling. Another thing that I didn't know existed until I joined taiko! #taikolove Day 13: Food. Like most taiko players, we love to eat. When we go on tour, we're always looking for some good local food to eat. And sometimes, at taiko events, our members even get in on serving the food!

Day 13 is #FOOD for the @nendaiko #TaikoLove photo challenge! We LOVE to eat all the time and this past year of having lots of guest artists in town and several members going to play taiko in Japan we are A LOT. Top pic: members of Enso Daiko and Daichi no Kai share a meal after the performance in Kobe, Japan â–¡â–¡ with over 100 taiko players! Bottom left: Leader of ensemble-MA Iris Shiraishi likes to host potlucks at her home when guest artists visit. Bottom right: We took Suzuki sense out for food when he was visiting too!

Day #14 of the #taikolove challenge! Today's theme is the atarigane (a small metal percussion played with a mallet). We often use the atarigane or kane in our pieces and are so grateful for @eienhi for teaching us new techniques earlier this year. #DingDing #smallbutfierce

Atarigane, also called chanchiki, is a brass instrument played with a shumoku (mallet or beater) typically with a tip made of deer antler. It adds a bright contrast to the sound of the big drums. This is a lovely throwback pic of pre-performance preparation by former KyoDaiko member, Travis. @nendaiko #TaikoLove Image Challenge Day 14 Theme: Atarigane â–¡: @travisclau (August 30, 2015 at the Philadelphia #Obon Festival at @shofuso ) #taiko #wadaiko #drums #drumming #instadrums #instaphilly #philadelphia #philly #atarigane #chanchiki

Which of these is not like the other? Day 14 of @nendaiko #taikolove Photo Challenge! How do you describe the atarigane to someone who's never seen one? The atarigane is our key tool for keeping everyone together when playing for 5 hours straight at the Rock 'N Roll Marathon, when everyone is so far apart and there's no acoustics since we're outdoors. But finally, how often do you folks have to fix your shumoku? As a group that tends to go all or nothing, our shumoku has a hard time surviving some of our performances...check out our last vid: can you see when the shumoku head takes a flying leap off the stage? . . . . #naruwantaiko #taikolovephotochallenge #atarigane #shumoku #dogbowl #ashtray

Inktober/#TaikoLove Day 14: "Atarigane," aka "kane" - The mallet for the atarigane (which is called a "shimoku") is usually made out of deer antler. So, cue magic atarigane deer. â–¡ . #taikolove Day 14: today’s theme “atarigane”. Also known as the chan-chiki, the atarigane can be found in most taiko groups due to its bright, high sound. As others have stated, studying Edo-Bayashi was truly the gateway to our specialists gaining insight to atarigane technique. (Bonus photo: don’t forget to always pack the shumoku!)

#taikolove Day 14: Atarigane (or kane). We use this instrument in a number of different ways, both handheld or in a set of three on a table. Recently, in a composition exploring the blending of samba and taiko, we featured its two-toned capabilities in conjunction with the agogo, the two-toned samba bell instrument.

#TaikoLove Day 14 is #ATARIGANE We use atarigane or kane in many songs from helping the shime keep a steady beat to some wild solos. Sometimes we hold it in our hands and sometimes we have a whole table of them to play with different tones and get more melody. This is an extremely versatile instrument! @nendaiko #taiko #taikoartsmidwest

Day 14 of @nendaiko #taikolove “Atarigane” - I first fell in love with Kane learning Ryo Shimamoto’s “Yui” with @allthingstaiko in 2011. Since studying #EdoBayashi in 2012 I’ve become a lot more fluent on Kane □ here is a photo and video of me doing a Kane solo in 7 performing David Wells’s “Copernica”! It was challenging but super fun! You can see the full video at #krisbergstrom’s Vimeo channel =) PC: Taso Papadakis
